Technical Fault at Check-in Leads to Flight Delays at Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport Skywalk

Travellers faced lengthy delays at Manchester Airport today following a failure of IT systems necessary for check-in. Airline staff had to resort to manual check-in procedures, meaning that each family group took about 20 mins to check in. This led to severe delays, largely affecting Thomas Cook flights but also affecting other airlines including Virgin, SAS, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines.

Thomas Cook apologised for the delays, blaming “an issue with overnight maintenance”, and assured travellers that systems were back up and running and they were endeavouring to get travellers to their destination as soon as possible.

Travellers criticised the airlines, saying that they were given no information on what was going on and were told conflicting stories by airline staff. This echoed criticisms made of BA during their IT failure a couple of weeks ago, and leaves us wondering when airlines will learn that sometimes things go wrong, but how you handle those problems makes a huge difference to travellers.

Big thanks for the £304.70 transferred to my bank account today. My claim related to a three-leg flight from Norwich UK to Phoenix USA via Schiphol. The CAA suggested I had a good case but could do nothing because the delay occurred within Dutch jurisdiction. I twice did battle with KLM/Delta myself but they would not budge. Another claims firm tried but threw in the towel. So congratulations to Claim4Flights for taking it on and winning – and for getting the money transferred into my bank account within two days of notification. Very impressed!
