Heathrow Airport Chaos Following Terminal 3 Fire Alarm; Flights Delayed

heathrow airport terminal 3

Heathrow airport was again thrown into chaos following a fire alarm sparking the evacuation of Terminal 3 yesterday. The airport has again been criticised for poor customer information and organisation, with many travellers not being given clear evacuation guidance or information about what was going on.

The evacuation began around 12:30 p.m., when passengers who had passed through security were ordered out onto the apron, but other passengers were given no clear guidance on how to evacuate and where to muster. They were told to evacuate the building, but were given no information apart from the automated fire evacuation announcements. Passengers who tried to find information on departure boards were told not to congregate.

Around 35 minutes after the alarm first sounded, Heathrow issued a statement to passengers: “Our teams have investigated and there is no fire in T3 despite the alarm. Passengers will be directed back into the terminal shortly.”

Planes which had already been boarded left shortly afterwards, but many flights were delayed as terminal 3 is very busy, handling about 50,000 passengers a day.

Many travellers took to twitter to criticise the airport’s handling of the incident, pointing out that if there really had been a fire or other incident, such as a terror attack, this could have been disastrous.

Big thanks for the £304.70 transferred to my bank account today. My claim related to a three-leg flight from Norwich UK to Phoenix USA via Schiphol. The CAA suggested I had a good case but could do nothing because the delay occurred within Dutch jurisdiction. I twice did battle with KLM/Delta myself but they would not budge. Another claims firm tried but threw in the towel. So congratulations to Claim4Flights for taking it on and winning – and for getting the money transferred into my bank account within two days of notification. Very impressed!
