Delays of up to Four Hours as EU Introduce Rigorous Checks on People Entering Schengen Zone

Queues Due to Schengen Checks

The EU have introduced more rigorous border checks at airports across Europe following a crackdown on people entering the Schengen Area. The border-free Schengen Area allows the free movement of EU Citizens without being subjected to border and passport checks. Countries in the Schengen zone are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

The new Regulation 2017/458, introduced by the EU, supports the checking of non-Schengen passengers passing through the Schengen Zone against what is believed to be a security database. The regulation is not yet in full swing, with some airports yet to implement stricter checks which come into full force on 7th October 2017.

It is understood the new checks have caused major delays at large European airports and even caused passengers to miss flights. This is unfortunate for passengers; as the delays are outside of the airlines control, passengers cannot claim compensation under EU Regulation EC261/2004.

Big thanks for the £304.70 transferred to my bank account today. My claim related to a three-leg flight from Norwich UK to Phoenix USA via Schiphol. The CAA suggested I had a good case but could do nothing because the delay occurred within Dutch jurisdiction. I twice did battle with KLM/Delta myself but they would not budge. Another claims firm tried but threw in the towel. So congratulations to Claim4Flights for taking it on and winning – and for getting the money transferred into my bank account within two days of notification. Very impressed!
