Chaos at Stansted Caused by ‘Hole in Runway’ As Flights Diverted, Delayed and Cancelled

Stansted Airport

Passengers were faced with terrible flight disruption on Sunday when emergency repairs had to be carried out on the runway at Stansted. BBC journalist Joe Lynam wrote on Twitter: “There’s a ‘hole’ in the runway at Stansted airport according to the pilot of my Ryanair flight from Italy which had to divert to Luton.”

Several flights were delayed or cancelled, and eleven flights were diverted to other nearby airports while the runway was closed. Many people posted images on social media of lengthy queues of unhappy travellers at the airport.

After the closure, Stansted Airport posted a statement saying flights were now running again, but “some flights may be delayed or cancelled”.

It added: “Our runway was temporarily closed between 5.30pm and 6.10pm to allow for minor repairs to be safely carried out and some arriving flights were diverted to other airports during the closure.”

“This temporary measure was deemed necessary for safety reasons and we would like to advise that the runway is now open and flight operations are back to normal.”

Big thanks for the £304.70 transferred to my bank account today. My claim related to a three-leg flight from Norwich UK to Phoenix USA via Schiphol. The CAA suggested I had a good case but could do nothing because the delay occurred within Dutch jurisdiction. I twice did battle with KLM/Delta myself but they would not budge. Another claims firm tried but threw in the towel. So congratulations to Claim4Flights for taking it on and winning – and for getting the money transferred into my bank account within two days of notification. Very impressed!
